Slender Billed Vulture
The rare Slender Billed vulture which was once successfully bred in captivity in Kolkata was spotted again after a gap of nine years indicating the revival of the critically endangered species. Its population is believed to be less than 1000 in India. The vulture population has fallen since 1990s when use of diclofenac,a chemical used to treat animals became rampant in India and Pakistan. The Ministry of environment and forest has opened two captive breeding centres for vultures in Pinjore and Kolkata categorised as critically endangered by international Union for Conservation of Nature.
