Desert is a flat area covered with a thick sheet of loose sand.At some places there are small hills of sand called sand dunes.Hot and dry winds blow here.They carry a large amount of sand with them.These winds can shift the sand dunes.Thar Desert is located towards the west of the Northern Plains.It stretches from Rann of Kachchh in Gujarat to the borders of Haryana.It covers a large part of Rajasthan.There are very few streams in the desert.At some places underground water comes to the surface through a spring.This is called an Oasis.The land around an oasis is fertile.Most villages are situated near oasis.Water from River Satluj has been brought to the desert through the Rajasthan Canal.Cutting of trees and overgrazing have increased the spread of desert areas.
