The Ganga River Basin
River Ganga originates from the Gangotri glacier in the Himalaya mountains. Yamuna is the main tributary of the Ganga.
The Yamuna joins the Ganga near Allahabad.This place is called Sangam. Rivers Ghaghara,Gomti,Gandak and Kosi come from the Himalayas and join the Ganga.Rivers Chambal,Sind,Betwa and Son join the Ganga from the south.
The Ganga flows through Uttaranchal,Uttar Pradesh,Bihar and West Bengal.In West Bengal ,the main river splits into two main branches.One branch enteres Bangladesh and is called Padma.It joins the Brahmaputra.In India it is called Hubli.It is the most important branch of the Ganga.Kolkata is situated on the banks of the Hubli.
