Language And Literature In Ancient India
The heritage of India in the field of languages is quite rich. There are mainly two groups of languages -the Indo Aryans and the Dravidians. Most of the languages spoken in North India like Sanskrit,Hindi,Punjabi all belong to the Indo-Aryan group while languages like Tamil,Telugu,Kannada and Malayalam etc belong to the Dravidian groups.Sanskrit was the language of the Indo-Aryans.With the passage of time it was used only by the Brahmans and the Kshatriyas and the common people began to use their own dialects which are called prakrits.Pali was another language which was commonly used in Ashoka's rock and pillar edicts.Several plays and treatises were written during different periods.
