The Miracle Worker
I am very grateful and humble to you all for giving me this award and believing in me. I was blind and a drowned rat with a heavy Irish accent, like they used to call me when I used to live at the Perkins institute. My life changed drastically from me not being able spell my name to teaching basic living skills to other disabled people and earning a reasonable living. I was so blind that I could barely even see my father’s old and crippled face. Teaching and training Helen was pure hard work but definitely not impossible. To be truthful she is no less than a strong cub. Teaching Helen wasn’t only an achievement, it also built self-esteem in me and the fact that I have potential and I can achieve my goals despite my disabilities. I would like to thank my trainer/teacher who was no less than a father, Mr Anagnos for believing in me and giving me this wonderful opportunity so that I can prove that I am capable enough. I would like to thank the Keller family for their instant cooperation. And, last but not the least, this award was not possible without Helen. At first spelling letter was just a game to her but soon she recognized language and that was when I saw that desperateness in her. She completely changed. From being a curious trapped animal she turned into an inquirer ready to learn. It all happened and it was supposed to one day because “nothing is impossible”. We share some hard time and the fun moments. Sometimes I just couldn’t keep up with her cheeky and clever mind, especially when Helen spat water on my face. All I can say is that she truly is a KELLER girl. Thank you
